Classroom Updates

WELCOME TO GRADE 2

September, 2023

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

It is my pleasure to be teaching your child this year.  I look forward to working closely with you and getting to know your child. Please note that I will be sharing information with you this year by email. An update will be sent home a few times per month. I am hopeful that this will be an effective method of communicating classroom news and learning goals with you, celebrating/highlighting some of the learning that is happening in our classroom, and conveying important reminders.

Please note that, due to ongoing student registrations, classroom reorganization is a possibility until the end of September.

Classroom Information For Grade Two:

  • French will take place second block of the day (10:45-12:00 am). Madame Angela Sandri will be your child’s French/Social Studies teacher this year.  Even if you do not speak or understand French, parents and guardians can still have an important role to play in supporting their child’s learning.  You can listen to your child read from a simple French library book or any other source.  Ask your child what the story is about in general terms.  If you have any questions regarding the French program throughout the year, please contact Madame Sandri.

  • We will be having Gym twice a week and we will visit the Library once a week.  Library days will be listed in the agenda as a reminder for students to have their library books back at school.

  • Every student is expected to use our school Agenda.  It is an excellent way to learn organizational skills and to assume ownership for schoolwork.  It also allows teachers and parents to communicate information or news.  When the agenda comes home each night, please read it, empty the front pocket and then initial it.

  • Your child will be bringing home a reading folder shortly.  Your child should be reading at least 10-15 minutes every evening.  Regular reading is the key to reading successfully!

  • I am looking for volunteers to assist with reading conferences in the Grade 2 classroom during the first block (9:30 am - 10:30 am). Please note that the OCSB requires all school volunteers to complete a "Vulnerable Sector Check" prior to volunteering in the school. If you would like to volunteer, or accompany our students on future field trips, please complete the necessary process found at www.ocsb.ca/contact/volunteers/. If you are interested, please send in a note as soon as possible. THANK YOU in advance for taking the time to go through the screening  process.

  • We will be keeping a regular schedule regarding Homework this school year. All homework will be assigned on Mondays and will be due back at school on Thursdays.  This will allow for some flexibility within your family timetable and will also provide quality family time over the weekends (although regular reading over the weekend is strongly encouraged). Homework information and details are posted at the front of your child’s homework duo-tang for your reference. We will also be training our students on how to use Hapara Workspace online.

  • Please ensure that all foods for Snack and Lunch are nut-free and nutritious.  There is no sharing or trading of food due to life threatening allergies.  Please NOTE that students will be asked to bring home all containers and recycle in their own home (for now) rather than at school. A large ziploc bag should be placed in your child's lunch bag so that containers/garbage can be brought home and messes in the lunch bag can be avoided.

  • For your child's safety and the safety of all of our students, please be mindful that there is no stopping or parking along Arnot Rd. during pick up and drop off times. Please take advantage of the generosity of St. Pius School by using their parking lot. You can then walk your child the rest of the way. There is a crosswalk available at the corner of Dynes Rd. and Claymor Ave. for your safety.

  • Basic School Supplies are available here at school.  If you would like to donate two boxes of tissues, it would be greatly appreciated. Your child also requires a pair of headphones (available at most Dollar Stores) to use with classroom technology. Please note that indoor shoes (i.e. a second pair of shoes to be left at school) are required as well. Here is a suggested list of personal supplies you may wish to provide for your child this year:

GRADE 1/2 SUGGESTED SCHOOL SUPPLIES

  • pencil case or pencil container

  • pencil sharpener  (with shaving case)

  • pencil crayons and/or wax crayons

  • extra pencils

  • scissors

  • white eraser

  • ruler (cm)

  • 3  glue sticks (large)

  • personal size hand sanitizer

  • an extra pair of pants, undergarments and socks in a ziploc bag that can be left in the backpack (please ensure that all personal belongings are clearly labeled with your child’s name)

Please be assured that your child’s safety, learning and happiness are my first priority.  I look forward to working closely with you and getting to know your child.  You are your child’s first teacher, and together we can help your child meet the Provincial expectations for this year.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support.  I look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,

Mirella Vena
